“I Have a Dream” Quilt Submission

January 27

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech to thousands of civil rights marchers in Washington D.C. This has famously become known as his “I Have a Dream” speech, in which he talks about the racial injustices black people face and how it “is the time to make real the promises of democracy.”

60 years later, his speech is still as powerful and relevant as it was when first delivered. In honor of Black History Month, the Urbana Park District is asking the community to submit paper quilt squares filled with their own dreams that will then be “stitched” together to form a paper quilt, which will be on display at the Phillips Recreation Center from February 1-28.

You can pick up a quilt template at any park district facility or download here. Please return them to the Phillips Recreation Center at 505 W. Stoughton or by email to info@urbanaparks.org by January 27th.
