Russell Earl Cheatham (November 19, 1942-February 15, 2023)
A jazz organist, Russell Cheatham received formal piano lessons from local music teacher Mrs. Julia Valentine as a young man and later with Tom Pelligrino. While in the military, Cheatham was introduced to jazz. He was self-taught on the Hammond organ, with help from local jazz organists Ernie Hite and Jack McDuff. He played in several rhythm and blues bands, including Bobby Lane and the Wonders, led by guitarist Bobby Lane, brother of Eddie Lane. The band travelled for several years, primarily in the Midwest on the “chitlin circuit” – as far west as Denver, CO and as far east as Rochester, NY. He first formed a band, Caution and later Sorgum, a jazz trio featuring Cheatham on organ, Chuck Tripp on guitar and Walter “Jelly” Hines on drums. He was a frequent performer at Nature’s Table.
