William Warfield

William Warfield (January 22, 1920-August 25, 2002)

William Warfield was an internationally renowned concert bass-baritone who appeared on the Broadway stage, in film and in concert halls.  He was recognized worldwide for his performance in the film, Showboat, and a revival of the opera, Porgy and Bess. He was one of the leading experts on Black spirituals and German Leider.   From 1974-1990 Warfield was a Professor of Music at the University of Illinois, retiring as chair of the Voice Division. He also served as a president of the National Association of Negro Musicians.  In 1984 he received a Grammy in the spoken word category for his narration of Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait.
